Embracing Tradition: Malta's Vibrant Festa Season

The island of Malta comes alive during its annual festa season a sequence of extended weekends spanning from late May to September. This period sees towns and villages across the region uniting in celebration, honouring their patron saints and other revered figures.

Streets transform with vibrant banners, papier-mâché statues atop tall wooden columns, and festive decorations adorning the thoroughfares. The community spirit extends to homes, as residents decorate their balconies and rooftops with coloured lights, reflecting the theme of the occasion. Flags flutter over public spaces and private residences, signalling widespread participation.

One of the festa’s main attraction is the parade. It starts and ends at the church, winding through the town’s main streets. The parade includes a band playing traditional music, religious statues, a priest, and lots of local folks joining in. Watching it all unfold from beginning to end is truly a remarkable experience.

Typically lasting three days or more, the Maltese ‘festa’ is a testament to tradition and togetherness. Evenings are marked by lively gatherings, with stalls offering traditional and contemporary foods to delight attendees. Local favourites like Maltese nougat are often among the offerings.

Arguably, the festa’s most eagerly awaited highlight revolves around the captivating fireworks spectacle, customarily commencing on Saturday evenings. The presentation typically encompasses an amalgamation of automated ground fireworks, along with the timeless aerial pyrotechnics that evoke the classic whizzes and bursts. Undoubtedly, the fireworks stand as the apex of the celebration’s beauty, and their luminous display commonly unfolds beneath the starry canvas at the stroke of midnight.

Over the weekend, I had the chance to join in the festa celebrations in my hometown, Sliema. This festa is all about Our Lady Star of the Sea, also known as Stella Maris.

The festa really brings Sliema to life. It’s a time of excitement and unity that’s unique to our town. This celebration is a special way for everyone to come together and embrace our cultural roots.
